Small Creek

Small Creek, 3152', NE aspect Found some weird variability compared to what others are seeing. Lower elevation (2000-2500'): Rain crust at the road made for easy travel. Hand pits showed the rain crust with another consolidated layer about 10-20cm below it. Got failures beneath that second layer with hand pulls. At 3150' (dug pit on a sidehill near the toe of the glacier): Way different structure here. The whole 100cm column was just fist-hard faceted snow all the way to the ground - didn't find the December wind board that other people are reporting at this elevation. ECTN 29 @64cm, no propagation. Our pit was on about a 30 degree sidehill in kind of a sheltered spot, so I'm not sure how representative it is of more wind-loaded or exposed terrain. Seems like things are really variable out there, which lines up with what the forecast is saying about uncertainty. The lack of that hard wind slab layer was surprising given what others are finding. Also experienced very isolated settling during travel, but no shooting cracks or big whoomphs.
