Toured up into the Lakes Basin to assess early season coverage and snowpack structure. I chose a relatively flat tour so I wouldn't be tempted to rip my skins on the way out. Early season obstacles such as open water, rocks, logs and hoop trees are a legitimate hazard at the moment and not worth risking a season ending injury before it even begins. I dug a pit to assess structure and found 33cm of fresh snow overlaying a layer of basal facets. The facets had become quite saturated from the rain and froze into a crust 7cm thick, over top of 6cm of 2-3mm moist (almost wet) rounding facets on the ground. Nice day to take the skis for a walk but I'll see you at the resort until we get some more snow.
