Quick Observation

Ski tour up towards hanging lake Access: Multiple open creek crossings (5 I think), rain until about 1100m and heavy tree bombs from 1100 to around 1350m. We decided to wear helmets on the skin up 💣 Wooden bridges free of snow were interesting to skin/ski on. The snow was heavy and wet below 1550m. Height of snow: I probed around 215cm at 1350m on NW aspect and 200cm at 1420m where we dug a pit on a W aspect.

Snowpack

Pit results: Slope angle: 27degrees Aspect: West Depth of snow: 200cm Conditions: Light snow, no wind and low clouds. Altitude: 1400m We observed a layer of storm snow of 35-40 cm on the top of the snowpack. This storm layer was sitting on top of another 15cm of what seemed to be older and more consolidated storm snow (see picture #2). Column test CTM 11: resistant planar 35-40cm down (top layer storm snow) CTM 13: resistant planar 55cm down (older storm layer) CTM 19: The top 40cm storm layer failed entirely but it wasn't a clear bed surface (picture #3 is after we cleared the snow to restart our CT). We cleaned it up (picture #3) and restarted at 0 on the second layer of storm snow. CTH29 A slab of 30cm (135 to 165) failed on a crust that you can see on picture 1 Anything between 135 and 90 was crusty/icy and hard snow. We weren't looking for anything particular when digging this pit. We're new to the area and the elevation + aspect wasn't representative of what we were skiing that day. It was just for practice and curiosity.
