when for a walk up to the lake with the skins on to give the gear a season opener test. found plenty of snow falling on the climb up, but it tapered off as we hit the meadows. lots of new snow, a bit punchy feeling around with the ski poles. above us: we could see plenty of evidence of wind loading at the ridgeline (pictured) dug a quick test pit to practice with some newer folks at the south end of the meadows, on a north/east facing slope below treeline.
lots of snowfall between 9-12 am, and then tapered off after. cloudy all day
did a quick practice test in the trees to take a look at the old snow, and recent storm layer from the past few days. things seemed fairly firm (more than fist pressure) below the new snow layer. got it to fail at what we think is the interface between the storm and old snow (8-10cms down).
