Quick report
Went out to Todd Lake around 1pm to check the snowpack and try to ski some sheltered eastern aspects in the trees above the lake. Lots of skiers and riders up here today, with a lot of tracks seemingly spanning the extent of the eastern aspect. No collapsing or whumpfing observed on skin up. Relatively calm weather, with snowfall moderating in intensity throughout the afternoon, and a few short bursts of wind. Dug a pit just below the wind drifts on the ridge line at 6,850ft on a 20 degree east facing slope in what appeared to be undisturbed snow. Extended column test resulted in an ECTP13, failure occurring on the faceted layer between the upper crust and the indicated faceted layer. Interface was not particularly smooth, and the slab took a small amount of encouragement to slide off. Slacked off on snowpack measurements today for reporting, sorry. Labored attempts to activate this layer on small test slopes proved largely unsuccessful. We were not huge fans of the relatively low ECTP, but found confidence in nonreactive test slopes and some level of vegetation anchoring and skier impact. In an abundance of caution, our party chose to ski some of the slightly lower angle pitches of Todd Lake for the day (27-32 degrees). Deep snow meant slow skiing but the fresh is more than welcome!
