Quick report
Went out to BT today hoping the snow might be decent up high based on what we found at Kwolh yesterday. It was cloudy most of the day, which originally I was thinking might help preserve the new snow from any sun effect. But it seems something just saturated the snow. It was SUUUUPER wet and heavy everywhere, even up high. It was warmer today than yesterday, but not THAT much, the big warmup is coming tomorrow. So not sure what exactly happened there, but man that was some heavy wet snow. I got started a little late, there was a group coming out as I was going in, they reported not great vis in Tower and a slightly odd snowpack. As I was going in the top of the mountain was in and out of the clouds. Lots of snow glopping on the skin up, and some natural roller balls. Decided to head up to Pucker and see if the snow seemed OK there, and see if I’d get a vis window. Snow up there was also heavy and wet, but not too bad. Dropped a couple cornices and didn’t cause much roller balling. I lucked out and got a 5 minute slight visibility window so dropped. Conditions were variable in the line, with mostly pretty good albeit heavy snow (fine on a snowboard), along with a few surprise stripped-to-the-crust sections. Nothing slabby or cracking, only issue was the heavy snow sometimes starting to develop roller balls, though I couldn’t see much of that in the low vis. About 5 minutes after I was out the bottom, the whole mountain was swallowed in a cloud and disappeared. Strange moody weather today. It was lightly drizzling as I left, and it’s supposed to be like 10 deg warmer tomorrow, so I think it’s probably going to be a bit of a mess out there tomorrow…
