Old Ski Bowl

The snowmobile ramp at Bunny Flat is in rough shape (see photos), but continuous snow coverage exists on the Everitt Memorial Highway into the Old Ski Bowl. Snow surfaces were soft in the Old Ski Bowl upon our arrival around 1045am. Quality corn snow for skiing and riding existed, especially at upper elevations. Below about 8,500 feet, this week's warm temperatures have left poorer surface conditions, which became mushy by early afternoon.

The ingredients for wet loose activity exist on steep, warm slopes, especially near rocky terrain features. At noon on a southeast aspect at 8,200 feet below a rock outcropping, the entire upper snowpack was wet, and a thin crust about three inches below the surface was beginning to break down (see annotated photo). Boot penetration was knee-deep in this location.  

Rime-ice covers the rocks of the Trinity Chutes and Red Banks in Avalanche Gulch. Falling rime will continue to be a hazard on the upper mountain in the coming days.
