Quick report
East facing terrain began to soften around 10am. Fairly solid refreeze in open areas. Less so in mid elevation trees. Noticed some large pinwheels and cornice pieces on the east face but little in the way of recent wet activity.
Dug two hasty pits to look at water in the upper snowpack. The first was at 9,000' on the way up the SE Ridge at 9:30am. I found wet snow that hadn't refrozen above a melt freeze crust down about a foot (30cm). This pit was in a small opening in the trees, so probably on the warmer side of things. The surface was refrozen about 3” deep.
The second pit was on an open SE aspect at 8,800' in Coal Creek. I found the same crust down 20" (50cm) with no evidence of free water above it. Shear Test Moderate, Q3. Several other ice lenses were visible in the top 8" (20cm). All were frozen at 11 am. Not shocking to find variability in the snowpack and minimal insight with regards to wet slab potential, but worth keeping an eye on the water in the snowpack as we enter the last few days of mild temps.
