Quick report
Skied a gully on the east face of Mt. Wood today, from 12.3 down to 9k. We traveled on predominantly east facing slopes, with some walls tilting slightly SE or NE. The gully itself was mostly fully supportable( to boots and skis) windboard and old bed surface, which was starting to facet on the slightly . It also was just softening in the sun at noon where panels faced E and SE, with a few cm of warmed snow. This made for surprisingly awesome skiing. The more northerly facing walls were quite faceted and soft, with little wind affect. The lower angle apron, which was due E, also had 4-6” of moist surface snow on a supportable melt-freeze base. The surface on the ascent was heavily wind and melt-freeze textured and 3D, but with the softening, also skied quite well. Even NE slopes below about 10.5k were warming in the sun, and moist, including previously faceted areas. We saw multiple old crowns near the ridgeline on the far lookers left part of the face, in steep NE terrain. We also found old debris piles under most of the gullies of the E face. We had mixed sun and clouds today, but when the sun was out, it was quite strong. No wind at all, except at the ridges, and 56 F at the car at 7200’ when we got back in the early afternoon.
