The settled weather this week offered a good chance to get a look at the whole snowpack up high. The skiing was dense and supportable today, with 5-10cm of soft new snow on top of a wind-packed, but still F hard base. Further down, 25cm of 4F hard, refrozen 'sierra cement' from last month seemed to be strongly bridged over a 1F hard wind crust at 80cm, which is still floating on about 20-25cm of sugary facets. Below that is a dense 'right side up' base to the ground, where minimal basal facets could still be observed, but were mostly involved in brush and other ground anchors. Simple shovel shears didn't show any signs of instability, and even the slab and crust above the facet layer was stubborn to move.
