It felt like a beautiful spring day in March up at Chester along with the hordes of boot packers. Nice just to get out, check the gear, do some beacon practices and enjoy the day. Had no other goals than to slide around a bit on super mellow terrain. Saw some tracks of scramblers, and possibly skiers traverse several start zones of fully loaded terrain with rocks and the open water of Chester lake below. Pretty high-consequence terrain if things go badly. Snow depth was around 50cm at the lake and it carried surprisingly well with the usual caveat around rocks, snags and other pointy things. There is already a temperature crust forming on solar aspects and 20mm surface hoar x-talks in cold air drainages. A pretty unique start to the season to be sure considering it's only Oct. 6 and more snow is forecast for next week...
