Quick Observation
Decided to poke our way up NRC today for a quick pre party lap. We felt nothing spooky on our way up, and were feeling pretty good about heading to the top of the line. 3/4 way up we decided to do a hand shear to confirm our good feelings and we got bad results. Small ball bearings crust a couple inches from the top, but more notably, about 60cm down, on what I’m presuming was the recent melt freeze. Full planar slab fracture with very little coaxing. We continued until we got to the exact (more west facing) aspect we were going to ski and did the same shear to same result (two photos are the two shears) ski out was a mixture of lovely pow turns and heinous refrozen ski track turns lol. That being said, we saw no evidence of recent slides, felt no whumphing or cracking, and the ski out felt bomber. Perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time though, that slab is a sleeping giant.
