Quick report
Started early today and skied mostly N/NE aspects. Accordingly, we did not encounter any wet loose problems or associated signs such as roller balls as we spent the day nearly entirely in shade. We did, however, find some fairly wind affected snow on more northeasterly aspects at roughly 5000-6000 ft (a bit below the ridgeline). See photo from 5800 ft. Also noted a small cornice beginning to form at the ridgeline (again, see photo). Beyond the surface texture, we found primarily soft slabs that tended to be 1-1.5 cm thick or so from hand pits. In isolated places there was a firmer slab/more distinct breakable crust, and slabs soft and hard alike could occasionally be up to ~3 cm thick in some spots. We saw no signs of instability within these layers, but nonetheless tried to avoid steep slopes with small windslabs (either soft or hard). Given the hummocky terrain in this area, it was somewhat challenging to nail down an exact pattern to the spatial distribution of wind affected snow. When not in wind affected snow, the skiing was excellent! Weather was primarily sunny with some thin, high-level clouds - views to the Olympics, Rainier, and Vancouver Island.
