Overcast skies with on and off light snow showers throughout the day. SW winds were moderate to strong, blowing snow in exposed terrain.
Snowpack
We toured in the Tamarack Peak area today to look at the existing snowpack structure before another storm is forecasted for our area on Wednesday. We dug in 3 different elevation bands to see if we could find the Jan 2 pwl and also to examine the facet layer at the base of the snowpack. At all 3 locations, the basal facets were unreactive to snowpack tests. At 8800' and 9400', we found the Jan 2 buried surface hoar layer. It too did not produce unstable snowpack test results. At the 9400' location, recent NE winds had scoured away a majority of the recent storm snow, leaving the Jan 2 layer buried 2-3'' under the snow surface. HS at both of the 8800' and 9400' locations were 90cm. As we went up in elevation to 9650' on a northerly aspect, HS went down to 45cm. This location had seen heavy wind scouring from the NE wind event with all of the recent storm snow scoured away including the Jan 2 pwl.
