Quick report
A partner and I toured many laps on Hangover Hill the afternoon of Dec. 28. We didn't dig a pit but we did make basic observations as we hiked and skied. There was about 14" of new snow by midday (some deeper drifts) with about 2" more accumulating during our three-hour tour, for an approx. snowfall rate of 0.66" per hour. The air temperature did not exceed freezing and all precipitation at the pass and on the hill fell is light, fluffy snow. Rime on trees near the top of the hill indicated moderate or stronger winds from the south overnight. Winds were light most of the time we were out, with some gusts. Wind was south-southwest during our tour. We did not observe any cracking or collapsing during our tour, nor any other red flags, but we were far from the first folks on the hill. I could feel a variety of layers of varying density under the new snow when I pushed my ski poles through. The skiing was quite good, although stumps, logs and brush lurked beneath.
