Snow was surprisingly good at crystal today! We traveled to the bear gap area and then headed south, skiing a few areas along the ridge. We observed very isolated cracking near the tops of ridgelines, but wind slabs were stubborn and didn’t seem to want to propagate. There was ~8 inches of snow about the most recent crust (no crust from yesterday on the recent snow above 5500 feet). In hand pits, a 4-6 inch layer consistently sheared off upon isolation in the top layer of the snowpack, however we never witnessed any cracking or signs of propagation with this layer. Winds were calm, skies were surprisingly clear, and although there was definitely evidence of wind transport, much of the wind affected snow felt relatively stubborn.
Avalanche
N aspect, ~6300 feet. Skier triggered a very small wind pocket which ran about 80-100 feet and didn’t entrain much snow. Start point was in a rocky area right under a ridgeline. The slide likely happened yesterday.
