Olallie Butte, north of Mt Jefferson

I followed the trail up from the powerline corridor, and put on yaktrax at 6000’, where snow became continuous. From there to the summit, I observed snow depths from 0” (on scoured southern and eastern ridges) to 18” in more sheltered locations. Mostly, the snow was about 12” deep. Above 7000’, I observed numerous deeper snow drifts behind trees. For my descent, I plunge stepped down the steep NNW face. The snow density here ranged from “I’m glad I’ve got some traction but kinda wish I had my crampons with me” in the afternoon shadows, to ankle penetration in chalky, wind-drifted powder. Lots of exposed rocks, so it wouldn’t have been worth bringing skis.
