Spent lots of time on Proper and Ron's Ridge this week. South aspects were great skiing, with boot top powder and average depths of 80-100 cm. Regular snow and moderate south and west winds have been redistributing approximately 20cm of new snow, with some slab formation near ridgetop. We did not see any reactivity during the past few days up high. We did see quite a bit of wind effect down low (1600m) in open glades, with large drifts and slabs forming. North and east aspects are holding up to 180 cm, varying down to 140cm at the bottom of the runs. Test pits are giving moderate sudden collapses down 100 cm on big facets in isolated areas. There is evidence that a small avalanche cycle occurred during the mid January cold snap on N and E slopes below treeline between 1800 and 2000m. Suspect that the cold weather weakened some areas of thinner pack and then they failed during the warm-up. Otherwise our usual performers are continuing to reload after failing earlier in the season. The basal facet problem is still very evident anywhere that the September snow may be present. Going to be watching for things to wake up with more snow and warm weather.
