Quick Observation
Mount Rogers and Swiss Glacier Fairly consistent ~150cm HS on Swiss Glacier with many open crevasses and sags. We chose to travel roped up. On the south face of Mount Rogers we found significant wind effect and variable snow conditions. The surface snow was generally hard wind slab and was supportive to skis with minimal penetration. While bootpacking foot penetration was variable from 2-25cm. The exit through the moraines and into Lone Pine Lite was quite thin and peppered with rocks. The bottom 3/4 of Lone Pine was filled with avalanche debris, rocks, alders and open creeks. No natural or human triggered avalanches. The sun was veiled by the clouds enough to not have a significant impact on the snow in the areas we traveled. 12/10 day
