Purple Col

stephen.beatty, Thursday 6th January, 2022 9:15AM

Did the Purple Knob loop with a lap through the trees off Blacksmith Ridge south of the Dog Leg on the way up. Dug a pit on the E side of Blacksmith Ridge @ 2324m and had very similar results as the Visitor Safety profile from Dec 4. East to South facing slopes are holding more snow due to previous wind events. The two wind crusts were evident everywhere in ALP and TL. They are still supportive, did not sound hollow, and were not reactive to loading. The north facing slope from Purple Col was 10-15cm powder on bullet-proof wind crust that I couldn't pound my pole handle through. Lower down powder got deeper and fantastic skiing to valley bottom. Chilly in the valley but great up in the Alpine. Got a picture of Brent's line off Hero Knob - see MIN to north. CAUTION - they had to rappel the 30m cliff band in the middle.
