Mount Adrian Vancouver Island

Jan Neuspiel, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Elevation range: 1800m-1450m Temp range: -15 to -10 Winds: moderate lowering to light NW shifting toward N. Previous strong winds in exposed alpine scouring snow down to previous crust, creating hard slabs and loading lee and cross loaded features. Cloud cover: mostly overcast with occasional blue patches. Intermittent mid level cloud sometimes obscuring visibility HST: approximately 20cm Signs of natural avalanche activity: no recent activity, some old debris visible likely more than 72 hours old to size 1.5 Skier triggered activity: 1 size .5, east aspect, windslab, cross loaded gully feature, 35 degree slope, fracture height approximately 20-25cm Terrain skied: mostly lower angle slopes 30 degrees and below with some small features to 40 degrees. Aspects skied include N, NE, E, SE. Jumped on smaller steeper features without result. Profiles: N aspect, 1700m, 20 degree slope, HS 165. Generally progressive density snowpack with 15-20cm of F HST over 35cm of 4F previous HST over 70cm of moist or previously moist snow at K or P-K. 3cm of mixed forms at ground at P resistance. Easy, planar compression test results at interface of HST and previous HST but no tension in snow above to form slab. Moderate Planer results below a thin (1cm) crust down 50cm on DF. No temperature gradient in top 20cm of snowpack but by now that is certain to be happening. E aspect, 1600m, 35 degree slope, HS 200. Easy, planar compression test results at interface of HST and previous HST but no tension in snow above to form slab. No other results. Mid and lower pack as in other profile. Generally avoided areas of windslab and larger pieces of terrain. Could imagine skier triggered wind slab avalanches to about size two in specific locations. Good powder skiing in cold temps for Vancouver Island.
