Deeeep sledding and skiing to the west.
Yukon Field Team , Thursday 18th March, 2021 5:55PM
We skied north and south aspects today and found a variety of interesting things in the upper snowpack. Moderate south winds were actively forming new wind slab above treeline. We skied steep, south facing glades that had a stout sun crust buried under 30cm of low density powder. It skied quite good and the slab/sun crust combo was not reactive to skis. We skied a steep, north facing pillow line above an open creek and found a very reactive storm slab sitting on surface hoar that likely formed last Sunday. This problem only seemed to reach elevations about 50 vertical meters above the creek.
Snow conditions were: Powder. Weather conditions were: Cloudy, Sunny, Windy. We rode: Open trees, Steep slopes, Sunny slopes. Riding quality was good.
Avalache Conditions: 30cm + of new snow, or significant drifitng, or rain in the last 48 hours. Rapid temperature rise to near zero degrees or wet surface snow.
