Beautiful day out at NASCAR with intermittent dark storm clouds rolling up the valley from the west to beautiful blue skies. Gusty winds that were developing wind slabs on the easterly/southern slopes as we toured and producing cracking around the skin track later in the day. Also, we believe we heard some isolated whumphing while skinning later in the day. We dug a pit on a 20 degree north east facing slope down 130cm in a total snowpack depth of 180cm. Looked like there was around 50cm of fresh snow on top of the old snowpack with a funky icy/aerated interface. We got two results because our first was an ECTN1 and the second being an ECTN5 on the interface between new snow and old surface. Some hand pits confirmed this failure layer around the slope. snowpack seemed upside right, but with some noticeable weak layers 65cm down from the top and 120cm down from the top. There was intermittent snowing throughout the day but it didn't appear to result in any accumulation. Skiing was great fun with snow up around my knees!
