Quick Observation
Trip report of 5040 hut, Dec30/2025-Jan 2/2026: Super rad couple days at the Hišimy̓awiƛ hut! We were able to drive up to ~7.5km (high clearance 4x4 vehicles. Snow up in the alpine was a breakable crust in the mornings of the 30/31/1, then softened up quite a bit to some nice coastal hot pow in the afternoons. Quite warm temps in the alpine (~5C) allowed for some awesome afternoon spring like skiing conditions. Lots of snow dropping from trees causing a lot of pinwheeling but no wet slides or natural avalanches were observed Snowpack is still pretty thin- didn’t measure but would guess about 120cm, so some sharks are still out lurking and some of the steeper chutes to the lake are not in. We found small isolated pockets of an approx 10-15 cm un reactive windslab on westerly slopes, which led to some awesome filled in snow in the mornings when everything else was crusty! Very warm, no overnight freeze on Jan 1 night. Was misting when we left the hut on Jan 2 morning. Snowpack was very heavy and very wet even before the sun warmed it at 8am. Beauty hut! Shoutout Stefan the hut steward for sneakily fixing my busted pole!!
