Triggered as we hugged the ridgeline. The avalanche broke as the shaft of my ice axe went in. I was able to self arrest on the bed surface and my partner was not directly below me (snow cracked above him, he is lucky it didn't come down on him). Failure seems to be the new to old snow surface. The slab was finger hardness throughout.
