We went out looking for good conditions, but with an exploratory mindset and a wariness surrounding the persistent slab problem. We dug around 6100ft on a sheltered north aspect in terrain that was flatter than we’d hoped. Total snow depth was around 130cm and the buried surface hoar was capped with nearly 30cm of snow of increasing density. In tests, this layer failed at the beginning of hard force but did not propagate (CT21 Q2, ECTN19). These results sent us looking for more open terrain and aspects where the sun and wind had done their work. Skies were overcast or obscured all day. Moderate to strong ridgetop winds were present and wind transport was evident. Only a dusting on the sleds when we got back to them.
