Quick report
Below 2500' found 20-30 cms of dry snow on top of a rain crust that was supportable on skis but not on foot. Moist snow existed beneath the rain crust with 50 cms of settled storm snow since 1/4. Buried surface hoar was identified beneath the storm snow
Above 2500' found 10-30 cms of dry snow on top of a stronger rain crust that was still unsupportable on foot. The main difference was that moisture had not significantly penetrated beneath the rain crust above 2500'. Dry snow existed beneath rain crust with 50 cms of settled storm snow. The 12/5-10 rain crust sandwich was apparent along the entire route and was on average down 80 cms.
Dug pits at 2300' where before the most recent snowfall surface hoar was observed to be intact on 1/3. Also dug a pit at ~ 3000' in a location where this 1/4 layer of surface hoar had been previously seen to be disturbed by wind on 1/3.
At 2300' Pit results produced ECTP 11 down 80 cms failing in between the 12/5-10 rain crust sandwich. Also had ECTP11 down 42 cms failing on the 1/4 Buried Surface Hoar layer (1/4 BSH). 2 separate tests both did not repeat results.
At 3000' Pit results produced ECTP12 down 30 cms below the mid storm rain crust layer and ECTN18 down 50 cms at the new/old interface. 1/4 BSH was not identified in this location. I turned around at the bench at 3200' due to light and time of day, but mid storm rain crust was dissaperaing quickly with elevation gain.
Most notable obsevation was that propagation occured three times in ECT's with each time being a different layer. See the attached pit profiles for more info.
