Avalanche: Lackawaxen Lake

Rode Great Western this morning and took the Hidden Canyon gate with a partner with the intent of taking some laps in the Lackawaxen area. We found phenomenal riding on the first several laps on that side. Around the 5th lap I decided to drop a NE facing cliff feature. I dropped another cliff in the same pocket the lap before. As I dropped into my intended takeoff I clipped a rock that sent me off axis going off the cliff and I ended up landing nose down higher up the slope than intended which I believe helped me out. When I landed I tomahawked and mid Hawk I heard the slab pop and start moving. I was higher up in the pocket and I believe that's why I was able to swim on top of the slide.

I was carried about 150-175' down slope before I swam out of the side of the riders left side of the debris. I would guess it ran about 350-400' downhill. The crown was about 2' deep and I would guess it broke maybe 50-75' wide upon further review of pictures but I didn't stick around to investigate. This was certainly an eye opener and a learning experience as this obviously wasn't the best terrain choice for the day.

I attached a video from the bottom that my partner took as the slide broke loose, he was far down slope and was able to easily move out of the way. This was also immediately reported to Brighton Ski Patrol. As a side note, I actually do feel that my avalanche training and courses I have taken allowed me to remain calm and collected in the moment of getting carried. This was a close call that I will look back at moving forward, stay safe everyone!
