- <p>We expected to find graupel and facets above/below crusts in the snowpack. We were really on the lookout for wind slabs. We found some small isolated wind slabs 1 to 2 inches deep in pockets. They were not reactive. </p>
We skinned up from Big. Bring your rock skis for the ski down that road. We dug our pit at about 10000 ft. in the area of the dwarfed trees in the runout zone. We ended up booting up skiers right Cardiac Chute. No problems up there besides some minor sluffing. A little boney but good skiing. In the photos above you can see our pit with CT test results. You can also see the rock we found at the bottom of the snowpack with some Depth Hoar sticking to it. The block sticking out of the column was the failure on our shovel sheer test at the same layer as our CT. Graupel above a crust at about 90cm from the ground. You can see other crusts in our pit that aren't labeled, but produced failures in subsequent sheer tests on layers of facets or graupel.
