The Road into Kakwa

North Rockies

The road into Kakwa was long and icy today. The first km had mud but afterwards we road hard frozen snow all the way to the cabin. There was a solid overnight freeze that led to hard icy conditions and hot sleds for much of the ride in. Later in the day, the trail got wet and the sled stayed cool. There were a few bare spots and holes in the trail but the crossing at Buchanan was still easy with low flow from the cool temperatures. We were surprised to see many of the lower avalanche paths on southerly slopes had already melted right out. We could see signs of previous slides from the height of the warming but we saw no new avalanches.
