McGregor Backcountry

sprockter, Saturday 4th January, 2025 12:00PM
Conducted an AST1 Field Day in the McGregors for Robson Backcountry Adventures today. There is a 2cm thick semi-breakable MFcr buried Dec. 30th down 15 cms. that had significant effects on ski quality and travel. There were no signs of instability and no recent avalanche activity during the day. Weather obs were unremarkable. During our snow profile, we found the following results: HS 105cm @950m NW-facing Dug in open clearing near willows with rain runnels omnipresent CTVE (SP) dn 20 below MFcr on FC (failed during isolation) ECTPV dn 20 below MFcr on FC (failed during isolation) *No results on early December crust* Although we had very positive results in our snow profile, we felt the results were inconsistent with other observations in the area and likely due to breaking up the supportive crust during isolation of the block. Of note is this local crust found here that does not appear to be present in other parts of the region. We will be tracking the reactivity of this layer as more snow falls overnight and into tomorrow.
