Surface hoar growing
Northwest Coastal
ngottlieb , Friday 17th January, 2025 6:15PM
60cms of new snow on the January 8th (?) rain crust at 1250m. Widespread surface hoar growth as big as 9mm in places, all the way to ridge top. No wind effect to speak of where we travelled. Light breeze all afternoon but no visible transport occurring. Most of the snow stayed cold even in the sun - it was -6C on the Dome at 2pm - but the lowest pitch in the fish bowl area was heavy and producing loose wet sluffs. Lots of lines out there today and no evidence of instability aside from sluffing, at least where people skied (mostly solar aspects). Large, recent natural in Zymbuk 2 (NE aspect) as well as a couple visible in Monkey Bowl (Nw thru NE) and the usual spot in the shoulder or Super Bowl.
