Windy Arm burn and avalanche paths.

jamesminifie, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

We stayed a fair ways north today and skied the north facing burn and avalanche paths across windy arm. The day was overcast and -5C with little wind to speak of. The lake crossing was straight forward and no overflow was encountered. The snow quality was variable but for straight up Yukon skiing not bad at all. Packed powder with pockets of deep facets were the order of the day. As would be expected, the snowpack structure in this area is complex and untrustworthy. Though is was supportive and skied pretty well, the upper snowpack is supported by weak crust/facet combos throughout. We did not experience any whumpfing or cracking and the snowprofile I dug did not give notable results but as a Rockies kid I am ever conscience of how fast that type of snowpack can bite one's ass. One other notable was we did see fairly fresh bear tracks along the bottom of the avalanche path.
