Plaid Lake area

summitmountainguides, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:37PM
We drove to 1400m on access road with 4x4 low then toured up the road and access train from there. There was 25cm of snow at the parking and about 70cm at our 2200m high point. The day was cloudy, stormy, snowy. The area got 10-15cm of new snow with light winds from the west at ridge top throughout the day. No slab formation noted or signs of instability in area skied. A snow pack test on an East aspect at 2150m showed no shear results in full profile with height of snow of 70cm. In this location, the new 10-15cm of new snow overlies the November 19th layer consisting of a surface hoar (3mm) and the beginning of a faceted layer. The new snow overlies a variable sun crust on southerly aspect at treeline and below. The snowpack carried to skiing fairly well despite all the many early season hazards. The best skiing was on the access road. Great day out in the neighborhood!
