Wow! Awesome powder day in Kakwa today with 60 cm of soft snow overtop of the crust from early February. With considerable avalanche hazard and more snow falling all day, it's easy to make decisions. We avoided all avalanche terrain and exposure to overhead hazards, in the meadows below La Glace we observed frequent settling (whumpfs), a sure sign of instability. Digging down in the snow we found a layer of facets (sugary snow) on top of the crust. This layer will likely persist longer than regular storm slabs and warrants a wide berth. For now and the foreseeable future we will take the face shots in the flat terrain, and love every minute of it!
