Asulkan - Mouse Trap

cecelia.mortenson, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

A 20-25cm solft slab was reactive to ski cuts to size 1 on the Jan 17 SH in predictable convexities between 1750 and 1600m below the Triangle Moraine in the Asulkan Valley. Visibility was poor and it was snowing S-1 most of the afternoon, so we were unable to observe much above treeline, although cracking and reactivity appeared to diminish above this elevation band. On unskied North slopes above the Mouse Trap and waterfall slopes there were numerous Natural slab avalanches to size 1 that released on the Jan 17 SH. Most slides appear to be 20-30cm deep on steep 35+deg unskied (or lightly skied) convexities. Dating these slides was a bit tough - but they appeared to have released in yesterdays warm inverted temperatures. The Surface Hoar in this elevation band is well preserved size 6-10mm.
