Another fun day skiing around Quartz. 15cm of new snow from Monday's storm. Depth of snow ranged from 90 to 20cms. The old storm snow has been settling quickly, ski penetration only 20cms today. We skied pretty mellow south aspects and for good reason. While skinning along ridge top we triggerd a size 2 avalanche on a north aspect, see incident tab for more details.
Incident Report
Size 2, skier accidental, slab avalanche, North aspect. Party was skinning along ridge top. First skier set track along wind loaded ridge feature to avoid bare rock. As the two other skiers followed, they triggered the slope from the skin track. No skiers were caught in the avalanche. Crown depth ranged from 110-10cms and was 80m wide. The avalanche ran 200m. Snow resistance at the crown ranged from one finger to pencil and failed on 10cm of faceted snow at the ground level. As we traveled further along the ridge we observed several old natural avalanches that failed in the previous 24-48 hours.
