MORFEE MOUNTAIN

Ryan Shelly, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Great day in Morfee Mountain snowmobile area! South facing slopes had boiler plate melt freeze crust that was unbreakable on due south slopes. North aspects showed small point releases as a result of new snow and wind gusts (early am and afternoon) of up to 60km/hr. Lee aspects showed cracking and wind slabs on windward and lee aspects. Snowpack depth above 4,000ft was 200cm. Compression test results: ( CTH21 down 55cm SP on Facets) The reactive layer down 55cm was a hard slab. The upper 2.5 feet of the snowpack is a composition of soft snow (1ft of fresh approx) and another 1.5 feet of extremely dense melt freeze forms. We rode down into Benny's bowl and found this layer to exist on multiple aspects. The freezing level was at 4,000ft today. Under 4,000ft the snowpack is becoming isothermal. Trail up the mountain is in great shape all the way from trailhead to mountain top. Very large cornices are continuing to form throughout the Morfee Mountain tenure. Be careful as air temperatures continue to rise. The photo attached is the upper foot of fresh snow reacting to snowmobile sidehill. the second obvious line across the column (lower down) is the reactive layer (down 55cm), and is a hard slab. Be cautious with increasing temps as these layers may become increasingly weak and more prone to avalanche.
