Hobbes' Knob

gryphon003k, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

In an attempt to get out of the NE wind we tried out the little knob north of Summit Creek. We toured in up to the top of the knob and then enjoyed a powder fun in the trees to the Creek where you can ski Summit Creek "backside". We skinned back up and suffered back to the truck (the north parking area for Summit area) through wind-affected east aspect crust/heavy powder. Conditions were wind affected soft sastrugi except in south aspect trees, where there was powder. There is a prevalent crust under both. We dug a hasty pit while skinning in and had 150 cm snowpack, top 20 cm of fist new snow, 15 cm of pencil hard crust, over finger consolidated snow to where we stopped digging approx. 1 m down. The crust was well consolidated, and we were slipping on it skiing up. The new snow on top is not consolidated except where warm or wind affected on east aspects. All told an interesting day route-finding but "regular" summit was probably more fun.
