Quick Observation
Skied one run down the Ozone and across to the bottom of the Y glades. Visibility was generally very poor with occasional views. No natural slides visible in Simpsons in the brief views we had. We skied one run on north aspect and one on south aspect. Ski penetration was ~20cm and foot penetration ~50cm. One collapse in flat alpine on the prairie but no others noted. Alpine snow was wind affected skiable wind slab. Sheltered below treeline north aspect snow at ~12pm was dry and light. By ~2pm on south aspect below treeline in open 30 degree meadow with more wind exposure snow was noticeably slabbier, though no shooting cracks or kickturn wedges propagating. Did one quick pit to ground on a 28 deg south aspect in large open meadow below treeline at 1370m. 150cm height of snow. Storm snow since Saturday was 4 finger and down to 120cm , with 1F down to 80cm comprising the storm snow from earlier in the week. This combined storm snow was on top of a 3cm thick banded temperature/rain crust.. At 65cm was a visible 0.5cm thick surface hoar layer to 3mm. November rain crust was at 40cm above ground. An extended column test cut to test the upper temperature crust and surface hoar layer resulted in no failure on those layers, but did have a propagation @ #25 at the storm snow interface down 30cm. Wailing and shovel pulling on those lower layers we were testing for resulted in no failures.
