Quick report
Began tour around 1240. -6C in parking lot, snowing light/moderate, with about 15 - 20cm of accumulation. On tour up, did not note any signs of instability, and wind was calm. At 1,000 ft. on NW aspect, dug a pit at about 1400, air temp -6.5C. Jumped on a small test slope around 800 ft. elev. around 1330 with no results. Total snow depth was 295cm. Stability test ECTX. pit data is as follows. 295cm - 270cm: F storm snow from last night/today. Dry and uncohesive 270cm - 269 cm: K rain crust. 269cm - 254cm: F, looked to be at least partially faceted 254cm - 249cm: 4F 249cm - 234cm: 1F 234cm - 170cm: P Skinned up to about 1,500 ft. then descended, following the skin track for a little bit then dropped in to a 30-degree section of slope. Skiing was absymal. Despite the new snow, it was so dry and unsupportable that my powder skis (110 underfoot, 186 length) would break through the crust and then get caught underneath that crust as the new now above would make it tough for my tips to rise up again. For splitboarders or really fat rockered skis though, the dry powder's bound to ride great. To keep up speed, opted to briefly cross beneath a small 35-40 degree slope towards the end of the descent knowing a slide would be inconsequential given the small size and clean runout. But, I didn't expect to trigger anything. I ended up triggering a D1 storm slab that fractured above me, pic attached. Slope was W facing 600 ft. elevation. New snow depth there (20cm) was the same as rest of tour (15 - 25cm), so don't suspect it was wind loaded. Definitely makes me glad kept it at 30-degrees and under in the bigger terrain higher up. No signs of instability nor shooting cracks prior to this.
