Mount Allen

We enjoyed a stupendous day of skiing in the Many Glacier Valley! • Climbed and skied the WNW face of Mount Allen (~9400'). • A strong overnight freeze resulted in stout/fast travel conditions to start our day. • Below 6500' we found firm crusty conditions, but as we transitioned into upper elevations we began the encounter increasingly dry surface snow. • Above 8000' the surface snow was nice dry consolidated powder all the way to the summit. Deepest parts of the slope held 16+ inches of recent powder. The new snow was a little dense and wind buffed, but skied really fun and was bonded well to the underlying crust. • Summit conditions were comfortable and cold with calm/light winds out of the east and southeast. We don't think that air temps climbed above freezing at all during the day above ~8500'. • As we made our descent we transitioned almost perfectly from powder to corn skiing around 7500' It was pretty wild. We were pleased with our aspect choice for the day. Things were hot a wet below 6500' though and we had to carefully pick through a couple steep cruxes to make our way back to the valley bottom safely. • Lots of fresh bear tracks. And more snow on the menu next week?
