Snow pack was thin and heavily saturated up until about 8500', above which snow depth was about 3-4' and dry outside tree cover. Dug a pit at 9100' on an E aspect. Recent snow has set up into a thick and dense slab (+/-3' and 1f-4f) sitting on top of old sow from November. Two ECTs yielded no results but with a little shovel pry, the column released both times on a melt freeze crust interface between the old and new snow. A PST with a 120cm column propagated at 30cm on the same layer. Stomping the pit wall to fill it back in triggered a HUGE collapse. Hard to say what size as the sound took about 4 seconds to dissipate. Safe to say that if you find the trigger point, results could be catastrophic.
