- <p>Driving down Little Cottonwood Canyon today, I was impressed by the amount of water ice that is available to climb right now. For those who may be ice climbing, the Low avalanche danger does mean that natural and human-triggered avalanches are unlikely. Small avalanches can occur in isolated areas or extreme terrain. Over the last few days, we have seen <em>some</em> signs that the faceted snow surface is beginning to result in small loose dry avalanches on steep north-facing slopes. They're unlikely, but it is worth thinking about and climbing and belaying with some consideration of potential overhead hazard. </p>

Steep southeast aspects had a 1-inch-thick melt-freeze crust on the surface with faceted snow above and below.
