Snowpack

We found 40cm (+ or - 10cm) of soft to very soft snow above a thick (4cm), but breakable, crust sitting over a layer of very weak facets over most of the mountain. At mid elevation on an east aspect we observed propagation potential with medium force on the crust layer in a pit test. We also found stout wind board on exposed slopes at mid and upper elevation. We went searching for buried surface hoar in a sheltered near tree line area on north aspect, but could not find it. During the tour we experienced many small and localized collapses and several shooting cracks. With the array of crusts, weak layers and recent loading, I continue to have fair amount of uncertianty regarding the distribution and likelihood of the current avalanche hazards. Heeding the mountain's feedback we choose a conservative route to descend.
