Avalanche Gulch

With the warm temperatures over the weekend (5/31 & 6/1), numerous wet loose avalanches were observed in Avalanche Gulch including natural and skier/rockfall triggered. Rockfall was also observed, also triggering wet loose slides. (See photos). Moving forward into the summer, rockfall and wet loose avalanches will become an increasing concern. While climbing conditions are still good, we are entering into the month of June when temps are warmer and summer vibes are beginning to manifest. It is now the mountain begins to unravel. We should have another month of decent climbing conditions. July 4th always marks the "hump" of the season.
Manage aforementioned hazards by climbing/descending early, wearing a helmet, keeping your head up and limiting exposure through terrain management. In terms of the route selection, please refer to the climbing observation from the Memorial Day Weekend (5/24) for the variations through or around the Red Banks. The variation going to the Thumb and around the backside above the Konwakiton Glacier still holds adequate snow coverage as of 6/1, but keep a heads up for weak snow bridges above open cracks.This section of route can change and degrade quickly, making travel more difficult. In this case, climbers will have to ascend through a “notch” of rock (a fourth-class move) closest to the thumb.
