Quick report
PWL is definitely present and lurking below 5,200' on shaded aspects, though observations and profiles show quite a bit of spatial variability. Above that elevation, I have found improved structure and have not been able to produce significant test results. Still quite a bit of uncertainty as we know the problem is spotty and variable and there are still limited observations in the upper elevations. Consistently finding propagating test results between 3,800' and 5,200' on shady aspects (W-N-E). Tests producing initiation but not propagation in 1/10 crust and no results in JDL above 5,200' on similar aspects. Structure of both 1/10 and JDL is more favorable at elevations above 5,200', but the layers are there.
Snowpack
Surface varies with aspect and elevation, anywhere from 30 - 75cm of HST on top of JDL & 1/10 complex. Above 5,200', on shady aspects, JDL is presenting as harder, finer grained, and generally less faceted and not showing signs of instability in mechanical tests or other observations. Above 5,200', I have been seeing failure in the 1/10 crust, but no propagation. Between 3,800' and 5,200' on shady aspects from W to N to E, I have seen some variation in structure but generally the JDL is presenting as a 5cm thick layer of small, 1-2mm FC grains with a 4F-1F hardness. The 1/10 complex is generally presenting as a thin crust on top, with a 1cm thick layer of weaker grains beneath, all sandwiched on top of a thicker (~10cm) crust. The lower crust varies in strength/hardness but tends to feel somewhat brittle and decomposed. I have been consistently seeing propagating results on both the JDL and 1/10 at these elevations/aspects, especially in PSTs.
