- Intense snowfall ,extreme winds and natural and human triggered avalanches were on the menu today.
Our plan was to work the lower angle ridge up towards field of dreams then top out just south of avi gully just above 8k. Avoiding all avalanche terrain of consequence, and reusing the skin track for efficiency.
- First note worthy ob was a natural wind slab that was roughly 250 feet wide, ran for 400ft and from what I could see, a D2. (See image) NE Aspect, at 8k.
- Next was the intense snowfall rates today (1130-4pm specially). Peak snowfall rates were 3-5 inches per hour.
- On our last 2nd lap instability spiked dramatically, we observed widespread cracking and we triggered a few D1 soft storm slabs on small convexities that were not reactive on the first lap (Same terrain + aspect and elevation.)
- Most notable was an avalanche we remote triggered just NE of field of dreams on a NE ridge/convexity at 7500ft. 37 degree start zone, D1 soft storm slab, ran 400ft, 150ft wide.
- Also we dug a quick snow pit, NW @ 7200ft. HST 150cm, right side up , mostly 4F snow with F at top 40cm.
