Observation Type • Wind transport / wind slab development • Surface conditions Description Observed significant wind drifting on lee slopes above treeline along the ridge above Hourglass. Snow depths on ridges were approximately 1–3 feet, with wind drifts up to ~4 feet in loaded features. Drifts were well-defined with smooth, rounded pillows and cornice-like overhangs forming just off the ridgeline. Traveling along the ridge under the Great White Express, multiple lee features showed clear evidence of recent wind loading, including cohesive slabs and sharp transitions from scoured windward surfaces to deep deposits on the lee side. Snowpack / Stability Notes • Wind-deposited snow appeared cohesive and slab-like in places • Drifts were deepest immediately below ridgelines and convexities • Wind effect was localized but pronounced, consistent with recent strong transport events Hand pit results showed stable snow with surprising stability. A cut drift (convex rollover) did not break after repeated tests. No cracking or sliding in slabs but significant slough management was needed.
