Quick report
Successfully summited Mt. Hood via Old Chute. Was able to easily skin from climber’s lot to top of Palmer. Once above Palmer, put on ski crampons for a little bit then transitioned to boot crampons at ~9,000 feet. Surface conditions above Palmer was very icy although the ice crust was breakable most of the way up. Lots of wind affected snow and chicken heads. Devil’s Kitchen to summit was consisted of packed corn-like snow under a thin, breakable layer of rain crust. Encountered a couple sections where I couldn’t dig my ice axe pick as deeply as I wanted, but these areas were passable. Surprise sun appearance softened the snow between the summit and Devil’s kitchen for the descent. The ski down from Devil’s Kitchen to Palmer was mostly side sliding and dodging chicken heads. No avalanches. Saw signs of minor wind slabs.
